Believe it or not but this is the only location on earth where there is an island in a pond, on an island in a lake, on an island in the ocean! One of many astonishing facts about this very special place!
With the exception of a pulpwood harvest during the mid-1900's along the north and northeastern edge, this paradise island has sat peacefully in the middle of the largest lake on the island portion of our province. Since the amazingly successful introduction of moose to insular Newfoundland in 1904 some of their offspring found their way to the shores of this uninhabited island and for very good reason decided to call it home. There is no finer moose habitat on this planet than this 175 square kilometer (70 square mile) remote island. With an abundance of marshland, tuckamore barren, virgin forest, and numerous small ponds the initial numbers of moose have now exploded into a prosperous herd. Isolated by the challenging waters of Grand Lake, and fortified with rugged 1000-foot cliffs for much of its perimeter, this island has provided a safe haven for not only the moose but also the thriving resident populations of caribou and black bear. Local hunting pressure has been virtually non-existent due to the obvious difficulties with accessibility.
In recognition of the uniqueness of this pristine island, commercial activities were prohibited while provincial authorities considered the need for protective status. This review was completed during the autumn of 1999 with the conclusion that a limited commercial hunt would finally be permitted. Since ours is the only outfitting operation in this Big Game Management Zone we are happy to report that we now have this exclusive privilege.
With Sunday being a designated non-hunting day in Newfoundland this package uses it as the client changeover day. Arrival and departures from the helicopter base are usually scheduled during the mid-day period. A short but scenic helicopter flight will bring our guests to the base camp in the central portion of this 40 kilometer (25 mile) long island. This strategic location overlooks expansive marshlands, tuckamore barrens, and forested hillsides fringed with natural grassland. Utopia is the only adjective that accurately describes this landscape for the abundant moose, caribou, and black bear that call it home. From this base our clients enjoy six full days of hunting commencing on Monday and running through to the following Saturday.
To service this location the remote base camp has been carefully designed and constructed to ensure a high degree of comfort while maintaining the cozy ambience of a canvas shelter. The base camp location itself is in the heart of prime big game habitat. Game sightings from the camp door are not unusual occurrences during any given week. The present set up consists of two 14 ft x 16 ft canvas prospector tents, a storage shed, shower stall, and two private outhouses. These modern canvas tents have full 6 ft side walls, use wood stoves for heat, are equipped with electric lights, and are erected on permanent wooden platforms with sturdy internal wood frames. The guest tent has two sets of bunk beds with comfortable mattresses (pillows provided), table and chairs, and plenty of wall space for drying wet items.
To extend the hunting range and opportunity a spike camp is also strategically located within a reasonable hiking distance from the base camp. This facility, at 10 ft by 12 ft by 5 ft (sidewall), is a little smaller than our base camp tents but not at the sacrifice of comfort. This camp is also erected on a wooden platform and is fully stocked with all the necessary amenities including sleeping bags, bunks, wood stove, cooking equipment, food, etc. The location of this spike camp allows our hunters to spend one or two nights of their week at the perimeter of our normal hunting range.
Our professional guides combine their skills to ensure your stay is successful and enjoyable in every way. With a 2 to 1 hunter / guide ratio these hunts primarily employ a 'walk and stalk' styled hunting technique. The terrain itself is best described as varied with wet bog land, open dry ridges, and forested valleys. To ensure the challenge of hiking this mixed terrain can be met we strongly encourage our hunters to condition themselves well in advance of their trip. A 14 ft aluminum boat with motor is based in a nearby pond to help access the spike camp region but is also available to speed access to neighboring hunting grounds.
We take pride in our role of responsible stewardship in our big game management zone. To protect the integrity of the moose population on the Glover Island portion of our hunting region we assign only 8 licenses annually to these hunting packages (at 4 hunters per week). The period of operation will vary slightly each year. For the 2007 season these dates accommodate both the Bow and Rifle hunters with the last week of the Bow Hunting Only season and the first week of the Rifle season being the period dedicated to these hunts.
Bow Hunt Week: September 2 - September 9
Rifle Hunt Week (Bow Optional): September 9 - September 16 |

For an additional fee our guests may choose to combine this exciting moose hunting package with a 'stumble-on' opportunity for black bear. As the uncontested native ruler of this remote island for centuries, these animals have reached their peak natural balance in terms of population numbers and size.
Scenic hikes are also available along the ridges of this island offering inspirational photographic opportunities of Newfoundland's unique landscape. These hikes are included providing they coordinate with the schedule of the guides. Although caribou hunting is prohibited in this big game management area the local herd is thriving. Hunters can expect many close encounters with these magnificent animals and, with a little luck, may play witness to the spectacular confrontations rival stags often display in their battle for dominance during the rut.
